The General Radio 1617-A Capacitance Bridge was introduced in Catalog T (1968) and remained available through Catalog 1978.

The Type 1617-A is designed to test large value electrolytic capacitors at the industry standard 120 Hz. It also features a built in three-level 120 Hz generator and detector. Using a DC-metered bias supply, it can measure DC volts applied to the unknown and leakage current drawn by it.

Balancing this bridge is aided by the GR Orthonull balance finder to help prevent a sliding null. Using Table I in the Experimenter below it displays EIA and MIL specifications for testing electrolytic capacitors, the 1617-A meets all of these.

Specifications

  • Range: 1 pF to 1.1 F
  • Accuracy: 1% under 0.11 F; 2% from 0.11 F to 1.1 F
  • Internal Generator: 120 Hz at 0.2 V, 0.5 V, or 2 V, phase reversible
  • Frequency Range: 40 Hz to 1 kHz
